It does not make sense to combine the RF signal of one to three Wi-Fi access points (APs)
and distribute it via the DAS, owing to the inherent difference between GSM/UMTS/HSPA
and Wi-Fi: Wi-Fi is distributed capacity via APs, and GSM/UMTS HSPA is centralized
capacity, distributed via DAS.
If you distribute the Wi-Fi RF signal over the DAS you face these limitations:
- Limited number of carriers in the same cell, limited capacity.
- Not enough capacity for the data users in most buildings.
- The concept of Wi-Fi is distributed capacity, not centralized in a DAS like the capacity of mobile services such as UMTS/HSPA.
- Wi-Fi is TDD; with more than one AP in the same cell the effect is that the APs are not synchronized and the transmission will collide, degrading the performance.
- Wi-Fi APs use antenna diversity; this is important to boost the performance, which is lost in the DAS.
- The desired coverage area for the Wi-Fi and mobile signal might not correlate.
- The sector plan on the mobile system will dictate the capacity on Wi-Fi.
