The SIM card is the electronic component used by modern GSM cellular phone networks to provide whatever service(s) you contracted with a cell phone company through your cell phone equipment. For that, you insert that SIM card into your cellular phone and presto! your phone is able to connect to the cell phone network.
Now, as time has flown by in cellular networks technology, there are several SIM card sizes or formats, every time they got smaller and smaller:
SIM card format and size comparison:
Height Standard reference
- Full-size 3.37 in (85.6 mm) ISO/IEC 7810:2003, ID-1
- Mini-SIM 0.98425 in (25 mm) ISO/IEC 7810:2003, ID-000
- Micro-SIM 0.59055 in (15 mm) ETSI TS 102 221 V9.0.0, Mini-UICC
- Nano-SIM 0.48425 in (12.3 mm) ETSI TS 102 221 V11.0.0
Now, the new iteration in this SIM card evolution is the e-SIM which means “ embedded-SIM” and it is actually a “virtual SIM” as there is no more physical card ir chip that you insert into your phone.
The actual CHIP is now built-into the phone, and the thing that happens is that it IS now fully programmable by the cell phone company.
So, instead of changing SIM cards every time you change cell phone number or, you change cell phone company. Your (or per the cell phone company’s instructions) erase the old e-SIM and reprogram into your cell phone a new e-SIM… but, all of this is software that gets stored in a special circuitry into your phone, the e-SIM circuitry.
Why you need one? Well, you don’t need one… unless your phone works with e-SIMs which, by the way, int he near future most phones will be e-SIM based. Some models of phones, namely the Google Pixel phones and the latest iPhones of series X and 11, do support e-SIMs.
In the future, all phones and cell phone companies will move towards using e-SIM instead of physical SIM cards. It is just an evolution o technology.
As any new technology, it has its supporters and its detractors. So, you will see here and there stories about why it is good or bad to have e-SIMs nowadays.
